Scotland + Venice is an international project displaying the best contemporary art and architecture from Scotland and one of the world’s most prestigious visual arts festivals, the Venice Biennale.

Founded in 2003, the project supports the development of ambitious and innovative new work, fosters Scotland’s connections with the global community and showcases why Scotland has a reputation for being a distinct, dynamic and diverse center for creativity. In 2022, Alberta Whittle will represent Scotland at a major exhibition as part of the 59th International Art Exhibition, one of the events that make up La Biennale di Venezia.

Scotland + Venice is a partnership between Creative Scotland, British Council Scotland, National Galleries Scotland, Architecture & Design Scotland and the Scottish Government.

I've lived in Scotland all of my adult life but I am from a former colonial outpost and I'm probably not exactly what the Scottish public would assume a Scottish artist was. The work for Venice is very much a reflection about my feelings of being Black and Scottish, and what that means in terms of life expectancy and in terms of hope.
