School kids fly the flag for Scotland at International Youth Leadership Summit

24 Mar 2017

A group of teachers and students from Scotland will fly to the USA this weekend to represent Scotland at the 6th annual International Youth Leadership Summit. The group, made up of two teachers and four pupils, will be making the journey from Webster's High School in Kirriemuir, Angus, across the pond to Loudon County in Virginia, just a stone’s throw from the US capital.

Founded in 2012, the goal of the summit is to bring together young people from around the globe for an opportunity to share perspectives and consider their roles as global citizens. The Scottish delegates, along with the others from across the globe, will present to each other with drive and ambition what they believe to be important in the world.

This Scottish delegation will be joined by more than 20 other delegations from around the world, including France, Germany, Mexico, South Africa and Australia. Webster’s High School are in fact the only school chosen in the entire UK to participate. As well as taking part in the summit, the kids will get the opportunity to visit some of the incredible sights in neighbouring Washington DC.

Shaping The Future

The theme for this year’s event, which will take place from 26th March – 4th April, is ‘Reconcile the past, shape the future: building peace within and among nations’. During the course of the summit, students will examine the steps people and institutions have taken to build peace within their communities and across borders, and consider how these practices can best be applied to conflicts facing the world today.

The summit will also play host to two guest speakers: Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, an active participant in the American civil rights movement, and Deng Chol - a child refugee of South Sudan during the country's civil war.

Social Media Takeover

During their trip, the pupils will be tweeting from @Scotland, Scottish Government's official curation rotation Twitter account, giving followers a behind the schene look from the summit. The takeover will allow followers a live insight from the 'heart of the action'. Follow along with us!
