Legends | Surgery & Medicine

Scotland is a pioneer of medical research, surgery and medicine. Since the founding of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh over 500 years ago in 1505, Scottish surgeons, physicians and scientists have transformed our understanding of medicine and surgery. From the ‘Father of modern surgery’, Scotsman John Hunter, to James Young Simpson who implemented the use of chloroform and anesthesia, and Joseph Lister’s revolutionary work in antiseptics, Scotland made surgery safer, cleaner and a lot less painful.

Continued Scottish innovation and discoveries in penicillin, beta blockers, hypodermic needles, MRI technology, transplant surgery, keyhole surgery, along with the world’s first radiology department, have transformed the lives of patients around the world.

Today NHS Scotland is a world leader in healthcare innovation, maximising the opportunity of nationwide patient information gathered over the last 70 years to develop invaluable data for research and clinical trials, that no other country can offer.

Scotland unifies world class academic centres, clinical researchers and industrial partners to make continuous breakthroughs and innovations. A dedicated Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (MMIC) and the Industrial Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research in Digital Diagnostics (iCAIRD) will ensure Scotland remains a global leader in emergent medical technologies and new medicine production.

The Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre (SMS-IC) is linking Scotland’s expertise, data assets and delivery capability to accelerate the adoption of Precision Medicine, changing the way we think about health problems through, better diagnostics and earlier intervention, optimal treatment selection and more effective medicine development.
