Pope canonises nun with Scottish roots
The Herald
A 19th-century nun with Scottish roots has officially been declared Australia’s first Catholic saint.
Pope Benedict XVI addressed more than 50,000 pilgrims who gathered at the Vatican in Rome yesterday to see Mary MacKillop canonised as Saint Mary MacKillop of the Cross.
MacKillop – whose father Alexander hailed from Roy Bridge, near Fort William – had sainthood conferred on her on account of three miracles attributed to her.
