Olympics in Scotland
The moment has arrived. The London 2012 Olympic and Paralmypic Games are upon us, and as the country is gripped by Olympic Fever, Scotland has much to celebrate.
There are 54 Scottish Olympians and 23 Scottish Paralympians flying the Saltire in Team GB. They join an elite band of Scottish sporting heroes who have blazed a trail through the Olympic Hall of Fame. From Eric Liddell’s movie-inspiring win in Paris, 1924, to Chris Hoy’s record-breaking four gold medals; we are proud of the sports talent hailing from our shores.
In July 2012, over 450,000 Scots lined the streets to welcome the Olympic Torch as 829 Scottish Torchbearers carried the iconic flame round Scotland’s communities and some if its most iconic landmarks, including Loch Ness, the iconic St Andrew’s Golf Club, John O’Groats, the Forth Rail Bridge and the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway, Ayrshire.
The Scottish leg of the Paralympic Torch Relay will be taking place on 26 August in Edinburgh.
Scotland’s national stadium, Hampden Park, will be the proud host of eight games of women’s and men’s football from 25 July – 3 Aug.
Furthermore, Scotland’s cultural contribution to London’s Olympic year will be marked by over 250 one-off events, productions and performances as part of the Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 festival programme.
