Highland Games

There is a full programme of Highland Games across Scotland throughout the summer season. One of the most famous is held in the late summer at the Braemar Gathering, traditionally attended by the Royal Family. A selection of those taking place in Scotland in 2011 are below.

A traditional event which includes heavy weight events, pipe bands, Highland dancing, running events and a hill race. Championships awarded include the Scottish 22lb Shot Putt, British 90m Foot Race and the Scottish 200m Foot Race.

The games begin as the chieftain’s barge is welcomed into Lochinver Harbour by the Ullapool junior pipe band and the Chieftain along with their entourage of past Chieftains and invited guests are piped to the games field. Events include Highland dancing competitions and displays, tossing the caber, hammer throwing and other traditional heavy events, field and track events, hill race, solo piping, fly-casting as well as a craft and produce tent and a beer tent. Also many local and traditional food and produce stalls in and around the field.
