Bannockburn Monument
The Battle of Bannockburn is the most famous of all the battles that took place during the First War of Scottish Independence, and although full English recognition of Scottish independence was not achieved until several years later, it was a decisive Scottish victory, and was undoubtedly the battle that secured Scotland's continuing independence.
Today there is some confusion over the exact site of the Battle of Bannockburn, so the Bannockburn Monument overlooks the battlefield, sited where the warring parties are believed to have camped on the night before the battle. The abstract monument takes the form of two semicircular walls representing the opposing parties facing each other – 9,000 of whom died during the course of the battle.
